Ontario’s New CO Detector Law: What Homeowners Must Know

Ontario has introduced a major update to its carbon monoxide (CO) safety regulations – and if your home has a gas fireplace, this one hits close to home. The province is now requiring carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of any residence that contains a gas or fuel-burning appliance.

When the New Requirement Takes Effect

The mandate is being implemented through updates to Ontario’s Fire Code and takes effect January 1st, 2026.

Why the New Law Exists

Carbon monoxide is dangerous and potentially deadly because it’s colorless, odorless, and impossible to detect without an alarm. Even small exposure can lead to headaches and dizziness. Higher levels cause unconsciousness – and in too many cases, fatalities.

The government recognized a pattern – CO was accumulating on floors of homes where alarms weren’t required under the old rules. One detector in a hallway was never enough. CO travels unpredictably depending on airflow, venting issues, and appliance placement.

What the Law Now Requires

If your home has any gas or fuel-burning appliance (furnace, water heater, wood stove, gas dryer, gas fireplace, or an attached garage), you must have:

A carbon monoxide detector on every story of the home, including:

  • Basement
  • Main floor
  • Every upper floor
  • Any finished attic/loft

A detector located near all sleeping areas

(This part continues from the prior Fire Code requirements.)

CSA-approved alarms properly installed

Placement matters – ceilings, wall height, and distance from appliances should follow manufacturer guidelines.

How This Change Protects Homeowners

This isn’t just about regulation – it’s about practical safety.

The “every floor” rule:

  • Reduces detection time during a CO leak
  • Protects occupants who are not near bedrooms
  • Covers levels where fireplaces and other appliances are located
  • Ensures early warning even when CO migrates vertically through the home

It’s a simple upgrade with the power to save lives.

Our Recommendation for Gas Fireplace Owners

At Classic Fireplace & BBQ Store, we install and service thousands of gas fireplaces across the GTA. Our advice is simple – install a CO detector on every floor of your home, especially on the floor where your fireplace is located. Pair these detectors with an annual fireplace service call to ensure your fireplace is working safely and efficiently.

A gas fireplace is one of the safest heating products when maintained properly, but even the safest systems deserve proper backup.
